Maynooth University Town join Derry in making FAI Cup history

It wasn’t quite the historic goal haul Derry City managed, but it was history nonetheless as Maynooth University Town reached the second round of the FAI Cup on Saturday.

Maynooth took their forth Cork team scalp on their run to the Intermediate cup final and last 16 of Fai cup when defeating Leeds. 

A well organized Maynooth side controlled the game from start to finish at in Kildare.

Leeds defended well throughout the 90 minutes but were unable to break down the excellent Maynooth defence with the experience of Shane Hart and the excellent Connor Dunne , Connor Mooney and Gary Daly superb all day .

The first half was a tight battle with some half chances falling to Maynooth but scoreless at half time was probably fair.

The second half saw Maynooth move up a gear and Donnellan and Foley caused more trouble to the Leeds defence .

Marshaled in midfield by Daragh Raynor and Mark Colgan Maynooth the hosts began to open the game up

Gary Daly slotted home the first of the game after 52 minutes to add to  his Intermediate cup final goal at the Aviva Stadium. 

Leeds pushed to try back into the game and were especially dangerous from set pieces .. Leeds centre forward Eric Murphy caused Maynooth problems all day with his excellent running at and behind, but the Cork side couldn’t find passage back into the tie.  

Gavin Kinsella and Martin o Connor came on to add fresh legs to to Maynooth midfield and the tireless running of Daniel Burke’ and Cillan Duffy were a threat to the Leeds defence.

Eoin Mc Dermot replaced Donnellan and began to cause a tiring Leeds defence problems with is high energy and constant running with and without the ball

Leeds right back Coleman, who kept a close eye on Duffy all day, eventually got his reward and put the result beyond doubt on  90 minutes. 

Foley broke away and crossed a great  for Duffy to head home and bring Maynooth University Town FC to the last 16 if the FAI Cup for the first time in the clubs history.
