“Man up and fight me!” – Brazilian Golden Boy calls out Spike O’Sullivan

The man who has perfected the call out has been given a taste of his own medicine this weekend.

Red hot rebel Spike O’Sullivan [28(20)-2(1)] has had some unique a brilliant call outs over the years from visiting a Subway dressed in a mankini to call out ‘Dancing Queen’ Anthony Ogogo to impersonating Chris Eubank Sr to call out Eubank Jr.

However, just as it seems he is closing in on a massive fight with the winner of the mooted rematch between two of boxing’s biggest stars, Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez, the Cork man has been subject to a call out.

WBC #13-rated Brazilian middleweight Yamaguchi Falcao [15(7)-0] is keen to fight the Celtic Warriors Gym fighter and claims ‘Spike’ twice rebuffed offers to fight him.

The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist claims that he offered to face O’Sullivan both in Montreal last December and in L.A. at the weekend only to see the Mahon man face Antoine Douglas and Berlin Abreu respectively.

The pair are stablemates of sorts, with both being co-promoted by Golden Boy. However, Falcao is not happy with the Irishman.

The 30-year-old described how “Spike’s had a lot of favourable opportunities but when he has the chance to take on a tough challenge, he avoids it.”

“I twice tried to face him with no questions asked. Both times he refused to face me. I am ranked in the top 15 and you consider yourself a top fighter – why not face me?”

“My question to you Spike is why did you twice avoid the challenge for easier opponents? I want you to stop running from me, man up and fight me!”

A sparring partner of Derry’s Connor Coyle, Falcao is keen to kick on in his career and added that “I’m ready to show the world that I’m an elite middleweight by challenging other top rated 160 pound fighters.”

Jody Caliguire, one of Falcao’s advisers, stated that “we’re ready for anybody on any platform. Yama has never turned down an opportunity and we’re always putting our name out there,” before listing some of the other names they have sought to fight – including Donegal’s Jason Quigley.

“Aside from Spike, we offered to face Demetrius Andrade, Gennady Golovkin, Jason Quigley and Danny Jacobs among others. None of those fights happened. We don’t need to have our record built up – we’re ready to face the best right now!”

O’Sullivan is currently en-route home from California and his third-round stoppage win over Abreu.

The 33-year-old is expected to return to the ring on September 15th. This would either be on the undercard of the mooted GGG-Canelo undercard or perhaps even as the headline opponent for Canelo himself.

Should it be the former, Falcao could perhaps occupy the other corner. However, considering the Leesider’s meteoric profile, it looks likely that there will be numerous other call-outs in the coming weeks and months.
