Magee: McCarthy is the best prospect in Irish boxing

A HOST of talented Irish fighters are making early waves in the pro game at the minute, but debutante Tommy McCarthy is the best of them claims manager Pat Magee.

There is a deal excitement surrounding prospects such as Jamie Conlan, Marco McCullough,Jamie Kavanagh and a number of turned over amateurs such as John Joe Nevin, Phil Sutcliffe Jr, Jason Quigley and even Conrad Cummings.

However, Magee believes the big Belfast man is the golden boy of what could prove a golden generation of Irish pros.

The 23 year old former Senior heavyweight champion and international makes his debut in England this Saturday and the Belfast based manager and promoter believes his bout against Rolanda Cesna will be step one on the road to the top.

Indeed, Magee, who predicted European success in 18 months for another recent signing Sutcliffe Jr, believes McCarthy will be British Champion before 2015 is out.

“I think Tommy is the best prospect at any weight in Irish boxing at the minute. He has proven himself as an amateur. He was fighting men as a boy. At light heavy and heavyweight he was fighting men in his teens. You don’t get that at the lower weights. He has the talent to go all the way,” Magee told Irish-boxing.com..

“He has pedigree from the amateurs and the longer distances and smaller gloves further play to his advantage. The plan is to get back out on June or July and come september look for an eight rounder. With his experience we can put him on the fast track.”

“I don’t think their is anyone domestically that would be able for him and by 2015 he will be in contention for a British title. He will win that and we will go from there.”

There certainly is questions surrounding McCarthy’s promise from Camp McCarthy, but there are questions surrounding what weight the popular big man will fight at.

Magee is eyeing up a cruiserweight assault, but admits McCarthy could campaign as a heavyweight.

.”The only question is will his success be at cruiserweight or heavyweight. We will see where we are at in 12 months time. For now we don’t have to get down to 14st4lbs he can compete around 14st 10lbs until he is in the Championships mix.”

The manager, who guided road warrior Brian Magee to World title success, also revealed he hopes put McCarthy on top of some Belfast shows.

“We hope to combine fighting in England and Belfast. There are enough pros out their to support shows in Belfast. If we can start building and get TV back involved we can build from there.”
