Macklin Lee Irish derby looking increasingly likely

Matchroom will hold a press conference in London on Wednesday where they are expected to announce the full details of a Matthew Macklin headlined bill at the National Stadium on August 30th. That fight is expected to be a warm up for Macklin before a huge Irish fight night against Lee.

The Limerick and Tipperary middleweights have been linked for nigh on a decade now and both continually expressed an interest in getting the all Irish clash made.

However, despite offers being put on the table both have indicated the timing hasn’t been right and the fight was never made.

Indeed, with Lee putting himself in light middleweight world title pole with a victory over John Jackson, which came via  a knock out of the year contender, the fight looked further away than ever.

That was until last week, however, when news Matthew Macklin was returning to fight in Ireland with the backing of Eddie Hearn, Matchroom and the Sky Sports cameras.

Hearn revealed Macklin will fight in The Stadium on August 30 and indicated he wanted to make the eagerly anticipated all Irish fight between world contenders in November.

‘Mack The Knife’ echoed the Lee ambition and stressed his desire for the fight to happen and former Kronk star Lee told respected boxing journalist Kevin Byrne in the Sun Newspaper that he ‘wants’ to fight Macklin in the O2 in November.

With all parties open to the clash hopefully a deal can be sealed over the coming weeks and Irish fight fans will have a domestic derby with world ramifications to look forward too.
