Low Blows: The Buncrana Banger John Hutchinson

Top Pro Gif Ad
Every Wednesday we give Irish boxers the opportunity to give their fellow fighters a few digs and dish out some low blows.

These week it is the turn of Donegal middleweight John ‘The Buncrana Banger’ Hutchinson.

Q: Hardest Trainer
A: Back in the amateurs it would have been William McLaughlin. The man never stopped with GAA and football, the biggest engine and work rate you would ever see. Super fit. In the pros it’s definitely Jamie Cox, just a complete machine, never stops. He can run six-minute miles for 10 miles for fun on a day off!

Q: Biggest Moaner?
A: Joe Rea for sure. I lived with him in Wales and could never get him to gym. A real top lad and great craic, but when it came to training time, any excuse possible to get out of training was made.

Q: Funniest?
A: It’s a hard call for number one spot. It’s between Tyrone McCullagh and Big Sexy. Turner is a serious laugh, the craic is ninety, living with the man is unreal. You’d definitely want Tyrone McCullagh on any training camps or tournaments with you for a great laugh. You even know you’re just going to laugh from his Snapchats before you even open them.

Q: Biggest Ladies Man?.
A: Declan Geraghty won’t like this one, but I have to give Seamus Macklin the shout. Not a women can walk past the gym without a bit of banter going on.

Q: Most Intelligent?
A: I’d say Jamie Conlan. Top lad and well switched on. He knows what he’s wants in life from boxing.

Q: Least Intelligent?
A: A sad one, but it’s definitely big Kevin McBride in Boston. I used to get the train with him everyday and at first I thought he was drunk when I met him. He took too much punishment in boxing and the stories he has told me would make you feel so bad for him – and he had it all when he beat Tyson.

Q: Hardest Puncher?
A: Jamie Cox, nobody can match that man’s power. He’s an animal!

Q: Most Naturally Talented?
A: Michael Conlan. I used to watch him in Breen’s Gym training and he was just such a class act.

Q: Cheapest?
A: I’d say it’s Michael McLaughlin. In the pub he’d sit back and when it was his round he’d be gone missing, nowhere to be seen until someone else had bought a round.

Q: Worst Dancer?
A: Eamon Magee Snr. After boxing one night in Belfast we were all out, I thought he was shadow boxing with his funny looking wee moves.

Q: Worst Dress Sense?
A: It’s a toss of a coin between William McLaughlin and Michael McLaughlin Owen. William has his bootcut jeans and wrangler shirt tucked in, a pure country man, no dress sense. With Michael Owen in American it’s like ‘Spot the Paddy’ – big white socks and Nike AirMax and a Boston Celtics vest or a sleeveless wife-beater top.

Q: Biggest Messer?
A: Hands down Tyrone McCullagh. He trains hard, but burns candles at both ends. He just lives in a sweat suit, killing it. But he ain’t the king of making weight for no reason.

Hutchinson fights on Saturday night at the Tudor Grange Leisure Centre in Solihull against Sonny Whiting.
