LIVE UPDATES: Belfast Boxing – Collision

The sixth Irish boxing show of the year takes place tonight in Belfast.

The Europa Hotel is the venue for ‘Collision’ – the second MHD Promotions bill of 2017.

It is a card which almost didn’t happen, with headline opponent Floyd Moore dropping out last week. Thankfully, Portsmouth’s David Birmingham [6(3)-1(1)] has stepped in and will face home favourite Paul Hyland Jr [17(6)-0] in the main event.

A crucial, risky fight for Hyland, he needs to win and win well to ensure he challenges British lightweight champion Lewis Ritson in Newcastle on June 16th.

The undercard features two fighters coming back from losses last month. Super middleweight Vladimir Belujsky fights Iain Jackson while Jay Byrne is in with Jamesy Gorman.

Action is scheduled to start just after 8:00pm and Irish-Boxing.com will be providing round-by-round updates below. Make sure to keep refreshing the page to keep up with the latest action.

Round 4 – The Lagmore man continued behind the jab in the fourth before hurting Birmingham to the body. The Englishman retreated to the corner as Hyland rained in fire – at one stage looking at the referee to stop the contest – before Birmingham’s corner threw in the towel, much to his disappointment. TKO4 HYLO!

Round 3 – Hyland took a more considered approach in the third, looking to time Birmingham with big rights before uppong the pace in the final minute, forcing his foe to the ropes and unloading.

Round 2 – The stocky Portsmouth puncher comes back admirably in the second, landing his fair share but is being lit up by Hyland who can’t miss with the right hook, stiffening the legs with the final punch of an eyecatching flurry.

Round 1 – What an opener, the pair go to war straight away and Hyland quickly gets on top, long left hooks and big overhands right has Birmingham hurt. The Englishman is being battered around the ring, almost down at one stage, but he hangs on.

10:00pm – Main event time! Paul Hyland Jr v David Birmingham over eight rounds at lightweight.

Round 1 – Belujsky throwing bombs from the start, a right sends Jackson down. He rises, Belujsky continues the assault, wide hooks to the body, Jackson takes a knee, towel comes in – TKO1 Belujsky!

9:11pm – Time for Fight #2 – Vladimir Belujsky v Iain Jackson at super middleweight.

9:04pm – 40-36 to Jay Byrne, moves to 7(2)-4(1) and will continue his chase for the Irish welterweight title.

Round 4 – Byrne digging in big shots, putting his full weight behind them and trying to get Gorman out of there but ‘The Chin’ holds firm, we go to the cards.

Round 3 – Gorman showing a bit more in the third, pushing forward but Byrne is landing all the notable shots, timing the right over the top well. Looking loose, confident, and seems to be enjoying himself.

Round 2 – Byrne starting to sit down on his shots, good hooks to the body and some nice sneaky uppercuts.

Round 1 – Fast start from Byrne, peppering Gorman with combinations and moving his head well. The Belfast hardman soaks it all up and starts to throw in the second half but lands little.

8:43pm – Here we go, Jay Byrne v Jamesy Gorman!

8:31pm – First up will be Jay Byrne returning after his Irish light middleweight title loss to Craig O’Brien. Fights Belfast journeyman Jamesy Gorman over four rounds – and if Gorman ever needed motivation to go for it, he has it tonight after seeing his stablemates Casey Blair and Alec Bazza score a win and a draw respectively in Wales earlier tonight.

8:17pm – Slight delay here. Boxing due to begin in 10 minutes.
