Liam Smith dismisses Gary Corcoran’s chances against Liam Williams

WBO light middleweight champion Liam Smith doesn’t rate the organisation’s #5-ranked fighter Gary Corcoran [15(6)-0].

‘Beefy’ believes that the London-Irishman will be comfortably defeated by British and Commonwealth champion Liam Williams [14(9)-0] when the pair meet on Saturday night in Cardiff.

Giving his thoughts on the match-up for Boxnation TV – who will air the fight alongside World title bouts for Terry Flanagan and Guillermo Rigondeaux – Smith predicted that “Williams wins easy.”

The Liverpool puncher revealed that “I don’t rate Corcoran at all. He’s only got work rate.”

“He’s not the biggest puncher and there’s no method to what he does.”

“He doesn’t throw his punches correctly, there’s little variety and he’s clumsy.”

“He charges in gung-ho and is wide open to counters.”

By comparison, Smith [23(13)-0-1] believes that “Williams is far better all round.”

“He’s good technique wise, has a good, hard jab and is learning well under Gary Lockett.”

“The smudge against him is that he’s not really had any tough fights yet.”

In conclusion, the Joe Gallagher-trained boxer feels that Welshman Williams will “pick Corcoran apart and probably stop him down the stretch.”

The source of Smith’s dislike of Corcoran may come from an interview that the Hellraiser did with Glynn Evans in March ahead of his fight with Danny Butler where he outlined how “beating him [Butler] will get me a world ranking with the WBO. Then, after one defence, get me Liam Smith. I believe I’m ready for him or Liam Williams right now, if the fight gets offered.”

“They’re good champions but very beatable.”

The MGM-managed Smith is currently training ahead of his September 17th title defence against Mexican star Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas.

Smith’s prediction was one of twelve, with the panel of experts siding with Williams over Corcoran by a scoreline of 7-4, with one pundit undecided.
