Liam Gaynor delighted to have taken Bazza chance

As debuts go you don’t get harder than Irish-Boxing.com’s favourite journeyman Alex Bazza.

However, that’s what Liam Gaynor had to contend with when he punched for pay for the first time on the ‘Celtic Clash 2: The Rising’ card last Saturday.

The Stephen Kavanagh-trained lighweight was under extra pressure as the Belfast fighter was determined to come and cause an upset desperate to get a win to solidify his boxing licence.

While Bazza played his part in a Fight of the Night and Fight of the Year contender, the Kilmanagh youngster impressed en route to a debut points win.

Afterwards, rather than curse those who ensured a debut test, the 19 year old was delighted he got a challenge rather than a gimme start.

“That was just brilliant a great experience. I was expecting him to come and have a go and I am delighted he did,” Gaynor told Irish-Boxing.com.

“I thought I’d box better, but I got the win. People said Bazza was a tough start, but you have to take chances in this game and a win against him is a good start for me.”

“I was nervous going into it, not because he said he was coming to win or anything, but just debut nerves. All boxers have that win or fight mentality. I knew I was going to have to work, but that is what you want.”

“He [Bazza] told me after that it was a good all-Ireland fight and it will be fight of the night,” he added before answering the obligatory ‘what’s next?’ question.

“I am not sure what is next we will get some things confirmed and go from there,” replied Gaynor
