Leo Santa Cruz has laid his cards on the table ahead of his WBA featherweight title defence against Belfast’s Carl Frampton.

El Terremoto faces The Jackal at the Barclays Centre in New York on July 30th and admits that “I plan on making it a war”

Speaking to media after an open workout at the City of Angels Gym in Los Angeles, Santa Cruz revealed his gameplan and described how “from the first round I’m going to go straight at him [Frampton].”

“Always being on top of him, breaking him down, going toe-to-toe.”

However, that is not to say that Santa Cruz does not have a Plan B, and he explained that “my dad says that sometimes you have to be smart.”

“We have the reach, we’re taller than him.”

“If the inside-work isn’t working we’re going to have to box him

That’s what we’re going to do, if the inside-work is not helping, if it is not going to our favour, we’re going to box him.”

“Keep him on the outside and using the jab-jab and just trying to get him tired.”

Nevertheless, a war is what the three-weight champ wants, and Santa Cruz is wary of Frampton’s “running.”

The Californian predicts that “I’m going to be going after him, throwing a lot of punches, breaking him down, working the body, throwing the right.”

“Whatever I have to do to make him fight.”

“I think with my style is going to make him fight, he’s going to try and run but I’m going to always be on top of him and make him tired and make him fight with me.”
