Lauren Kelly eliminated from World Youth Championships

Lauren Kelly has been knocked out of the World Youth Championships in Budapest this afternoon.

Ireland’s last fighter to begin their campaign, the Edenderry middleweight was defeated by rangy French fighter Tallya Brillaux in the Last 16.

Enniskerry light fly Daina Moorehouse had been defeated by Thai Nillda Meekoon an hour previously in Hungary and Team Captain Kelly was unable to get Ireland back to winning ways – although there was no lack of effort.

The strong southpaw, a three-time European underage medallist pushed Brillaux for the full nine minutes but the French boxer was too long and too fast, forcing a count in the second and winning a unanimous decision.

Kelly will now turn her attentions to the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires in October where she will represent Ireland alongside Ballinacarrow flyweight Dean Clancy.

Meantime, Ireland have just one boxer left in the World Youths, our sole medallist, Newtownstewart light fly Jude Gallagher.

The Irish men’s captain will box Thailand’s Thitisan Panmod on Tuesday in the semi finals where he will look to upgrade his bronze to silver.
