Kurt Walker wins Commonwealth Games bronze

Kurt Walker has guaranteed a third medal at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, and will be joining Michaela Walsh and Kristina O’Hara on the podiums this weekend.

The Canal bantamweight came through his quarter-final with Lesotho’s Moroke Mokhotho to bag a bronze medal at the multi-sport Games in Australia.

Walker was in control throughout, counter-punching and picking his shots well.

In the end, he claimed a 4-1 split-decision win (30-27 x2, 29-28 x2, 28-29) over the African to move into the semi-finals on Friday morning at 10:30am – with the one scorecard against him being very harsh.

It is a second major medal for the Lisburn fighter who took European bronze last year. Here he will be looking to retain the gold medal for Northern Ireland following Michael Conlan’s success in Glasgow in 2014.

In the semi-finals Walker will face Canadian Eric Basran.

Earlier this morning, Walsh bagged a featherweight bronze with a destructive stoppage of Botswana’s Keamogetse Kenosi, while Dee Sullivan bowed out to home favourite Jason Whately – a second round count proving crucial – but certainly gave the Aussie a big scare.

There are two more medals up for grabs today, with Aidan Walsh taking on Kiwi Leroy Hindley in the welterweight quarters at 10:45am while Stephen McMonagle fights for super heavy bronze against another New Zealander Patrick Mailata at 12:15pm.

All times are Irish time. The Gold Coast is nine hours ahead.
