Ken Egan to return to the ring next month

Irish Olympic hero Ken Egan is to return to boxing for one more fight.

The Beijing 2008 silver medalist will take to the ring next month in a special charity bout in the African country of Uganda. As part of his work with Nurture Africa,

Egan will take on 2002 Commonwealth silver medalist and 2004 Olympian Joey Vegas on Saturday October 21st at the Big Zone Club in Nansana.

35 year old Egan has not fought since his last Elite Senior final back in 2013 when he drew the curtain on one of the most decorated careers in Irish amateur boxing history.

The ten-time Irish Senior champion however has stayed fit over the past four and a half years, regularly sparring. Stepping up training for his fight with active pro Vegas, Egan recently shared the ring with the likes of Irish light heavyweight title challenger Steve Collins Jr. and Elite Senior runner-up Tony Browne.

Turning pro in England following his strong amateur career, Vegas transitioned into a road-warrior of a gatekeeper, sharing the ring with some top fighters such as upcoming WBA light heavyweight title challenger Dmitry Bivol, former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly, and reigning WBC cruiserweight champ Mairis Briedis – who defends the belt against Cork-Cuban Mike Perez tomorrow in Latvia.

The 35 year old holds a 20(13)-15(9)-2 record, last boxing in May, and was once the African Boxing Union champion.
