Katie Taylor to box in world title eliminator on Joshua-Klitschko Wembley undercard

Katie Taylor [4(2)-0] will box for the first belt of her career and in a world title eliminator on one of the biggest boxing cards in history.

It has been announced this evening by Matchroom that the Wicklow lightweight will fight for the WBA Inter-Continental title on the Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko IBF/WBA heavyweight title undercard at Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday April 29th

Here Taylor will face unbeaten German Nina Meinke [5(2)-0], who is currently ranked #16 by the WBC at super featherweight and won the organisation’s Youth title in her last contest.

A win in less than two weeks time will put the Wicklow woman in line for a shot at the WBA belt when she makes her Irish homecoming which is mooted to be in November at the 3Arena.

The organisation’s current champion is Cecilia Comunales [14(9)-1(0)], however the Uruguayan has not defended her belt since last June and promoter Sampson Lewkowicz has announced that she is to move up in weight.

The news of a title fight for Taylor was deduced by Irish-Boxing.com over the weekend and published yesterday evening.

90,000 fans are expected at the stadium for the Sky Box Office Event which will be shown Stateside live on Showtime and deferred on HBO – becoming just the third bout in history after Lewis-Tyson and Mayweather-Pacquiao to be shown on both major US premium cable networks.

Also featuring on the undercard in under two weeks time will be a third Olympic gold medalist, Luke Campbell, who takes on Darleys Perez in a WBC lightweight final eliminator, as well as former Carl Frampton foe Scott Quigg who boxes in an IBF featherweight final eliminator against Viorel Simion. There are then also fight slots for Olympians Laurence Okolie, Joe Cordina, and Josh Kelly.
