Katie Taylor “relishing the challenge” of Wembley world title eliminator

Katie Taylor [4(2)-0] isn’t hanging around in the pro game.

The Wicklow lightweight debuted in November over six rounds, rather than the customary four. Two further six rounders followed before a jump up to eight rounds last month.

Now Taylor moves straight into a ten rounder and a world title eliminator on a frankly massive card.

It was announced yesterday evening that the Bray boxer will box for the WBA Inter-Continental belt on the Joshua-Klitschko undercard at Wembley Stadium on Saturday April 29th.

Here she will face Nina Meinke [5(2)-0] in what doubles as a world title eliminator.

Meinke is a former top amateur herself, albeit not at the level of the legendary Irishwoman, and is arguably the toughest opponent of Taylor’s career.

With the level of opposition, and the scheduled distance, Taylor is relishing the challenge.

The Ross Enamait-trained fighter described how “I’ve watched Meinke and she’s a very strong opponent. She’s unbeaten so it’s a step up for me and I’m sure she’ll be very confident.”

“It’s obviously a massive opportunity for both of us being a world title eliminator and it’s my first scheduled 10 round fight so I’m relishing the challenge.”

“I’ve been working very hard out here in Connecticut in training camp so I’ll be in great shape come fight night.”

The scale of the event, which is being televised on Sky Box Office, HBO, and Showtime, has not been lost on Taylor who noted how “it’s a massive fight for me on a massive night of boxing,”

“I’ve only been a professional for five months and already been lucky enough to box on some huge events but Wembley Stadium on the Joshua – Klitschko card is going to be something else again.”

“I’m just really looking forward to it now and being part of such a historic event.”
