Katie Taylor believes Natasha Jonas rematch will “definitely” happen

A rematch of one of the most famous female amateur fights of all time will definitely happen in the pro ranks claims Katie Taylor [9(4)-0].

The Bray lightweight and her Liverpool counterpart Natasha Jonas [6(5)-0] served up a sensational Olympic encounter at the quarter-final stage in London back in 2012 and are both now pro punchers under Matchroom Boxing.

The pair have been linked ever since the Wicklow fighter’s debut in 2016, for which Jonas was a pundit, but it is going to be a slow build.

The Scouse slugger, trained by Joe Gallagher, is first campaigning at super featherweight, winning the WBA International rankings belt last month and moving close to a bout with champion Hyun Mi Choi – a North Korean defector.

Taylor now has her eyes set on becoming undisputed champion at lightweight meaning fellow lightweight title holders Rose Volante (WBO) and Delfine Persoon (WBC) are next on the hit list.

However, the 31-year-old, who is one of only three Irish fighters in the history of boxing to unify world titles, believes a Jonas repeat is inevitable at some stage.

“I think the fight between Tasha and I is definitely a big, big fight,” Taylor told the Liverpool ECHO.

“Down the line and in the future, it’s definitely something we would like to do.”

“Natasha is obviously a fantastic boxer and it’s a fight that people would be interested in.”

“I definitely want to be involved in those big fights and so does Tasha, so it’s definitely one that will happen in the future.”

Jonas would have to move in weight to meet Taylor, who herself might eye up the light welterweight division if she does win all the lightweight belts.

‘Miss GB’ has also stated a fight with the Irish fighter is likely but has put all Taylor talk on the back burner for now.

“I’m not answering any more questions about her because my career is becoming all about her and I don’t want that,” Jonas explained earlier this year.

“I’m trying to go down a different road from her at the moment but everyone keeps asking about her.”
