Jono Carroll eyes titles as new World Champ is crowned

Jono Carroll [16(3)-0] is thinking big.

Like most fighters ‘King Kong’ has world title ambitions and, unlike most, has taken significant strides toward one over the last 12 months.

Now after his rematch win and impressive performance against old rival Declan Geraghty the Dubliner is hoping to secure a tilt before the year is out.

Highly ranked by the IBF by virtue of his Inter-Continental belt, a title fight before Christmas is more likely than most imagine.

This morning American Tevin Farmer [26(5)-4(2)-1] won the vacant belt versus Billy Dib in Australia and a first defence versus Carroll – perhaps on a Top Rank card in New York – looks a solid plan.

However, that will represent the start of a new chapter for the Dublin rather than prove the end game.

Speaking to World Boxing News Carroll revealed he has unification ambitions and even went as far as to suggest the likes of Vasyl Lomachenko and Gervonta Davis are on his radar.

“I know I’m going to be world champion, it’s only a matter of time but I don’t want to be a flash in the pan, once I become world champion I want to wrap every title up,” explained Carroll before further detailing his own high hopes.

“I want to be with the best of the best. I’m looking at Vasyl Lomachenko and Gervonta Davis, I want my standard to be up to their standard.”

“I’m not looking to be fighting Lomachenko tomorrow but I’m looking at how I beat the likes of him”.

The Marbella-based fighter, who is now trained by Albert Ayrapetyan, is currently on holidays following his decisive rematch win over Declan Geraghty and will return to camp soon.

Carroll was ranked #7 in the latest IBF rankings but is due to become the third-highest ranked fighter in the next update. Above him will only be Guillaume Frenois and Devis Boschiero, with the latter already pencilled in to defend his EU title in September.

All this means the extremely marketable Irishman becomes a very realistic option for a world title fight in the immediate future.

Fellow southpaw Farmer won the belt this morning Down UNder with an utterly dominant victory over faded former champ Dib.

Dropping the Aussie in the ninth round, Farmer posted a 120-107, 119-108, 118-109 unanimous decision win.
