John O’Donnell misses out on British title opportunity

John O’Donnell‘s big fight with Tamuka Mucha has been knocked back once again and now looks to be off the table completely.

The Galway welterweight, based in London, was due to defend the English title against the Zimbabwean-born fighter this coming Friday (February 16th) at the York Hall.

The fight date had been delayed multiple times up until now, with O’Donnell suffering from injury issues.

However, the 32-year-old has withdrawn from the bout and parted company with the belt. Mucha will now fight Freddy Kiwitt [12(7)-2(0)] for the vacant title on the Hayemaker/Ringstar show.

O’Donnell [32(11)-2(1)] won the belt against Eric Ochieng back in March, and this defence was due to double as a British title final eliminator – with the winner getting a shot at the belt currently held by outright owner Bradley Skeete who is expected to vacate soon.

Mucha [16(4)-1(0)] will be a heavy favourite for the fight. The African defeated Paddy Gallagher in a British title eliminator back in 2015, but last year suffered a shock loss to Serge Ambomo.

Belfast’s Gallagher [13(8)-3(0)] himself remains in the mix for the British belt following a defence of his BBBoC Celtic title against Gary Murray in October.
