John Joyce to soldier on regardless of fan praise

John Joyce [3(2)-0] believes he has made an impression since turning over, but claims the only opinions that matter remain those of his team.

The welterweight was one of a number of new pros to catch the eye after turning over in 2017.

Two destructive knockout wins and a big punching display against ‘The Chin’ Jamesy Gorman had some suggesting he packs a punch powerful enough to make an impact on the domestic scene in 2018.

The praise hasn’t gone unheard by the Irish Army corporal, but it seems to has gone unnoticed.

31 Joyce has adopted a tunnel vision approach and is focused on what his team, rather than anyone else, has to say as he progresses quickly up the ladder.

“I think I have shown I am someone to look out for, but to be honest I just go out there and do my thing. I’m not worried what people think or say. As long as Tony [Davitt, manager/coach], Barry and myself are happy with my performance that’s all that matters,” Joyce told Irish-Boxing.com before reflecting on a positive start to his boxing career.

“I thought my first year couldn’t have gone any better. Three fights and three wins in seven months was brilliant. Now I just want to move forward from that and get more fights this year.”

The Lucan puncher already has one fight scheduled for 2018. Joyce is penciled in for a fourth pro fight on the inaugural Ring Kings show where he will step up to six rounds for the first time.

The unbeaten pro novice is delighted to have secured a date so early in the year and believes the fact he will have to travel to Waterford to trade leather is a bonus rather than a hindrance.

“I’m delighted to get a fight so early and to kick off the new year straight away rather than waiting around for shows,” reasoned Joyce.

Going to Waterford will be a change for me. It will take me out of my comfort zone, which in my opinion is needed because I don’t want to get settled fighting in the same place all the time. So I’m excited about the change in venue.

There has been no official confirmation in terms of opponent for Joyce, but he claims former Stephen Carroll, Lewis Crocker and Sean Creagh foe Ferenc Jarko has been discussed. Regardless of the opposition for February 17th, the ambitious fighter is hoping to step up and work his way toward titles this year.

“I leave all the fight arrangements to Tony but hopefully I can fight for a title this year, maybe, we shall see.”
