John Joe Nevin to round off 2018 with London clash

Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin [10(4)-0] will fight this Saturday night in London.

The Mullingar super feather will appear on a British Warrior Boxing Promotions card at the famous York Hall in Bethnal Green.

Now 29, Nevin will box in an eight rounder against Nicaraguan journeyman Reynaldo Cajina [14(10)-55(13)-5] in a somewhat underwhelming match.

The Barcelona-based 35-year-old has plenty of Irish previous having been stopped in three by Davey Oliver Joyce, in two by Ryan Burnett, and on points by Declan Geraghty and Gary Cully.

‘The Mullingar Shuffler’ last fought in March in Philadelphia where he dominated previously undefeated Canadian lightweight Alex Torres Rynn – a Commonwealth bronze medallist – in what was his first eight rounder.

Since then he has seen a fight in June fall through and he will finally return to the ring on Saturday looking to position himself for, hopefully, a big 2019.

Splitting his time and career between Philly and home, Nevin has been on this side of the Atlantic recently, sparring Ray Moylette ahead of his big fight in Mayo last Friday and getting work in with coach Jim McDonnell in London.

Nevin has been preparing alongside Reece Bellotti who challenges for Ryan Walsh’s British featherweight title at the O2 Arena in London.

Also featuring on the card this weekend is Waterford KO artist Rohan Daté [6(5)-0-1] who continues his move down towards light welter with a fight against Bulgarian dangerman Angel Emilov [9(5)-24(2)].

Back in June, Emilov lost a close decision to Lucan’s John Joyce in a competitive and entertaining six rounder and Daté will be looking to improve on this in his scheduled six following a statement knockout of Innocent Anyanwu last time out.
