John Joe Nevin sends out warning to “big boys” following comeback win

John Joe Nevin [11(4)-0] is targeting the big shows and the big names in 2019.

The former standout amateur has endured a frustrating time since turning over in 2014, but wants to make 2019 the year were he starts to make his talent tell.

The 29-year-old registered an eleventh pro win at the York Hall on Saturday night outpointing Nicaraguan Reynaldo Cajina over eight rounds in just his second fight of this year.

The Olympic silver medallist defeated unbeaten Canadian Alex Torres Rynn back in March but saw a fight with New England champ Zack Ramsey fall through in the summer and returned versus journeyman Cajina.

A fight to serve a purpose rather than a testing encounter, Nevin got eight more rounds in the legs and took a 80-73 win.

Now after putting injuries and hopefully a period of inactivity behind him the ‘Mullingar Shuffler’ is keen to register a big-time breakthrough next year.

“I could have gone 15 rounds,” the former amateur world #1 told Bernard O’Neill after his victory.

“I put in a masterclass and I’m ready to step up and take on the big boys.”

“I enjoyed every minute of every round and I’m starting to really enjoy boxing again. I was in control, I kept the pressure on him,” added the Westmeath super featherweight before looking ahead to 2019.

“It’s nice to get the Christmas present early, but I’ll be coming for them [big names] soon. I’m going to try and get on the big shows in the New Year.”

“All those big names, tell them I’ll be coming for them in the New Year.”
