John Duddy helps Allan Phelan make New York waves

NEW YORK based Irish featherweight Allan Phelan is taking his career to the next level with the help of a man who took the City that never sleeps by storm.

John Duddy was a massive Madison Square Garden and Stateside favourite before he retired after failing to beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in a San Antonio hosted World title fight back in 2010.

Phelan, 22, has a long way to go before he reaches the professional or popularity heights that Derry’s Duddy did, but after opening his career with two defeats the Newbridge puncher is starting to make some noise across the Atlantic.

Phelan’s knock out win over Tomi Archambault last Saturday was his fourth consecutive stoppage win as he pushed his record to 4-2.

The win was witnessed live by former middleweight favourite Duddy, and the young fighter claims the Derry fighter has been lending his support.

“I spoke with John after the fight. He sent me a texts about the fight before hand also. John was very pleased with my performance and he was very impressed with how I worked on breaking him down and then finishing him with left hook,” Phelan told Irish-boxing.com.

” He will also be at my fight on April 5th in Queens.”

Things didn’t initially look that promising for Phelan as he lost his first two paid outings. Some shoulder trouble played a part in those reverses, but Phelan claims he is reaping the benefits of an increased work rate. The Kildare fighter is also ready to step up a level and moves to six rounders next time out.

“I was really delighted with the win,” he added. “The hard work is paying off. I always had the power the difference is just sharpening up on my skills and working hard. My next fight is less than two weeks away. It will be my first six round fight. It is great to have another fight so soon, I really want to keep busy this year.”
