Joe Ward is a once in a generation talent who will become one of the biggest names in boxing predicts one half of his new management team.

The Moat BC graduate announced last week that he was leaving the amateur ranks to become a professional a year shy from the Olympics.

The now former Irish captain’s departure was lamented by High Performance Director Bernard Dunne, who like many predicted the 25 year old southpaw would be a star of Tokyo 2020.

Stardom still awaits claims former fighter and part of the Times Square Boxing team that are currently looking to link the West Meath man to a big time promoter, Joe Winter.

However, it’s pro rather than amateur spotlight that the decorated amateur will be attracting according to the manager.

The chairman of Times Square Boxing is extremely excited about his new signing.

He claims the fighter, who burst onto the scene with victory over Kenneth Egan as a 17 year old, is a once in a generation talent and predicts Ireland will have a boxing superstar to celebrate in the future.

“Joe is a rare talent that only comes along once in a generation,” Winter says.

“We are excited for Joe’s future. We believe he will become a superstar and a future world champion. He is a great young fighter and a dedicated family man. Joe is good for the sport of boxing and he will continue to make Ireland proud.”

The turning over of Ward was confirmed last week, but the now former amateur standout has yet to confirm a promoter or a possible debut date.

Speaking about Ward’s professional future Dunne predicts with the right attitude the 25 year old can become world champion.

“They are very different sports, amateur and professional,” warned Dunne. “Time will tell. I think natural ability . . . Joe can fight and he’s strong. That will get him so far. Then it’s about his will, his will to prepare to win. Everyone has a will to win.

“It’s that ability to really prepare yourself in the best possible way to have the best possible chance of winning. Joe has the potential to be a world champion. Now it comes down to his will.”
