JJ McDonagh secures away corner opportunity versus unbeaten top prospect

JJ McDonagh [16(8)-5(2)] has secured another away corner opportunity.

The Mullingar middleweight has had a fight confirmed in Poland next month where he will aim to take the ‘0’ of another undefeated prospect.

McDonagh will face Ukrainian-born Polish-based prospect Fedir Cherkashyn [11(7)-0] over eight rounds on the Knockout Night 6 card in Łomża on Saturday March 23rd.

The 23-year-old debuted in 2015 at light middleweight but has since moved up a notch. Cherkashyn had two years out after racing to 7-0 but returned in 2018, racking up four wins including three over eight rounds.

Yet to step up from journeyman level, his most notable win came last October where he outpointed the notably durable Bartlomiej Grafka over eight rounds.

McDonagh also last fought in October when he retired heading into the fourth round of his clash with English former world title challenger Chris Eubank Jr in Saudi Arabia.

The 33-year-old southpaw carried an injury into that bout but is said to be fully fit and has been in training camp for this fight since late last month when it was agreed.

The Eubank fight was McDonagh’s fourth of 2018 having had a win and a loss in Ireland’s Last Man Standing in March, knocking out Ger Healy but being outpointed by eventual winner Roy Sheahan, as well as an outing in Tijuana.

Previously, in November 2016, McDonagh took the unbeaten record of Matchroom light heavy Jake Ball via stunning first round knockout.
