Jason Quigley’s Management respond to Matthew Macklin Twitter Attack

Jason Quigley’s management outfit have hit back at Matthew Macklin after comments made in the wake of their charge’s maiden career defeat.

The Donegal middleweight suffered a painful ninth-round retirement loss to Tureano Johnson on Thursday night in L.A. and Macklin was not happy.

The two-time European champion and two-time world title challenger strongly criticised the management of Quigley [now 16(2)-1(1)].

While not naming Sheer Sports Management, Quigley’s backers, Macklin implied that they were essentially sponsors – “fanboys with a few quid” – and took particular umbrage with the decision to build Quigley on the U.S. West Coast rather than the East Coast and cities with big Irish communities such as New York and Boston.

The outfit’s three main players are CEO Ken Sheer, vice-president Lyle Green, and PR guru Rachel Charles who, like Macklin, was born in Birmingham.

Alongside Quigley they also manage the careers of Monaghan brothers Aaron [8(5)-0] and Stevie McKenna [2(2)-0].

Like Quigley was initially before relocating to Sheffield, the McKennas are based in Los Angeles for training.

Macklin has moved into the world of management – and is also keen to expand into training – and claimed that he had approached Golden Boy, Quigley’s promoter, offering his services in both areas.

Sources within Team Quigley dispute this revelation and, in a statement sent to Irish-Boxing.com and other Irish outlets, Sheer Sports have defended their work with ‘El Animal’.

The statement sent came from the pen of CEO Sheer who stressed that “Jason Quigley made a well thought out decision to move forward with Sheer Sports Management and financial consideration was not the impetus for his choice.”

“Jason is not just a great boxer but very intelligent and makes well thought out and educated choices (anyone close with Jason knows that is true).”

“His dream was to train in California and fight for Golden Boy Promotions.  Sheer Sports facilitated that dream (as we have done for all of our fighters over the past 7 years).”

“Our relationship with Golden Boy Promotions is outstanding, we work closely to choose the right opponents during the appropriate time in our boxer’s career.”

Sheer then went on to claim that “Jason has participated in almost every Golden Boy event on the east coast over the past several years.”

Golden Boy have had 20 shows on the U.S. East Coast since Quigley turned pro, with the Finn Valley man featuring on two of these bills.

“Sheer explained how “that said, the majority of Golden Boy venues are on the west coast – as Mr Macklin is aware a manager does not determine fight venues.”

“Jason will be back and we will continue to support him on a daily basis.”
