Jason Quigley handed fight date NEXT WEEK

Jason Quigley [15(11)-0] will fight on this side of the Atlantic for the first time in his professional career NEXT WEEK.

It has been announced this afternoon that the Donegal middleweight will appear on the undercard of Charlie Edwards’s first WBC flyweight title defence against Angel Moreno on Saturday March 23rd at the Copper Box Arena in London.

Quigley last fought in October, defending his NABF title in Los Angeles against Freddy Hernandez, and has now finally had a new date confirmed.

The Ballybofey boxer has been in camp in Sheffield with trainer Dominic Ingle the past two months, with suggested outings in both Boston and Philadelphia before today’s confirmation for the Matchroom Sky Sports bill.

To date, Quigley’s entire professional career has played out in America under the guidance of his promoters Golden Boy who, like Matchroom, are alligned to the DAZN streaming platform.

The Finn Valley fighter looked a good fit for the Philly bill this weekend alongside fellow Irish fighters Katie Taylor, Jono Carroll, and John Joe Nevin – and Gabe Rosado has made an unsubstantiated claim that Quigley turned down a fight with him on the card – but it was not to be.

Instead he boxes on this side of the World for the first time and Quigley sees this as a plus for his friends, family, and fans.

The 27-year-old is happy to be fighting close to home and said that “I’m excited to make my UK debut in London.”

“I know my fans at home are going to be thrilled that they have a short distance to travel for this one. It’s great to get a chance to fight in London and fight so close to home for me.”

“I’m very grateful to Golden Boy Promotions and Matchroom Boxing for working together to give me the chance to fight on this show.”

The opponent and number of rounds for Quigley will be confirmed shortly.

Currently ranked #6 by the WBA and #9 by the WBC, the Ulsterman is keen to move into major contests in 2019 having seen a fight with Japanese star Ryota Murata fall through last year.

A fight in Ireland in the near-immediate future has also been suggested and, while he’s not home yet, it certainly looks like the relocated Quigley is getting closer to a homecoming.

Featuring alongside Quigley on the undercard next weekend is a British light heavyweight title ifght between Joshua Buatsi and Liam Conroy and a British and Commonwealth title fight between Lawrence Okolie and Wadi Camacho along with further appearances for Lewis Ritson, Shannon Courtenay, and Sean McGoldrick.
