Swindon-Donegal super middleweight Jamie Cox [22(12)-0] secured something of a golden ticket yesterday..

The fearsome puncher was confirmed for the 168lbs portion of the World Boxing Super Series which runs from September to May in the super middle and cruiserweight divisions, with a prize pool of $50,000,000.

A single elimination event, quarter finals take place in September/October, semis in early 2018, and finals in March.

Cox has forged himself a reputation for his performances in sparring with the likes of James DeGale and Badou Jack, and will now get the opportunity to exhibit his talents on a wider stage.

“I’m excited to be joining the World Boxing Super Series,” said Cox.

“This is great opportunity. I’ve never shied away from a challenge and I’m looking forward to testing myself against the top names in the division.”

“I think the tournament format will suit me well, and this will be a chance for me to show everybody what level I’m at.”

“I know I’m capable of winning. I’m ready to show the world what I’m all about.”

“I train very hard and I’ve done it in the gym before with top champions and now I’ve got the platform to do it on the world stage.”

Cox suggests that, such is his relatively low profile, he may be overlooked by the bigger names in the bracket. The 30 year old is likely to be one of the four unseeded boxers, meaning he will be chosen by one of the top three seeds (or automatically assigned to the fourth) at the draft gala in Monaco next weekend.

The undefeated puncher, who fights at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday in a warm-up, noted that “maybe they might take their eye off the prize when it comes to me. More fool them if they do because I’ll be training for every single fight like it is the final.”

“Maybe people will see me as the dark horse of the tournament. If that’s the case, I’m ready to cause a shock.”

Also confirmed ae WBA champion George Groves [26(19)-3(2)] and Swede Erik Skoglund [26(12)-0] who moves down from light heavyweight, with five more to be announced in the coming week.

Names rumoured include Callum Smith and Anthony Dirrell, should their upcoming WBC title fight be able to be incorporated into the competition, as well as the likes of Turk Avni Yildrim, German Tyron Zeuge, and Dane Peter Nielson.
