James Tennyson hopes Jono Carroll can beat Tevin Farmer

James Tennyson [23(19)-3(3)] is pulling for Jono Carroll but admits that his fellow Irishman faces a very tough task against Tevin Farmer.

Carroll [16(3)-0-1] will become the second fighter from these shores to challenge the IBF super featherweight champion when he takes on Farmer in his native Philadelphia this Friday night.

Tennyson boxed the same foe in Boston back in October where he was stopped in the fifth round.

Bodyshots undid the Belfast banger – although he and his team were left dissatisfied when referee Arthur Mercante Jr immediately waved the bout off following the second knockdown.

Tennyson has since moved up to lightweight, making a dominant debut in the class last month when he destroyed the unbeaten Garry Neale.

Following his win over the Poleglass puncher, Farmer [28(6)-4(2)-1] would look somewhat less impressive against Costa Rican Francisco Fonseca and now faces another Irishman in Jono Carroll.

Whereas Tennyson was an orthodox power-puncher, Carroll is a southpaw pressure fighter and bring some different qualities to the table than the destructive Ulsterman.

Tennyson hopes that Carroll can go where he couldn’t, but notes that “it’s going to be a really tough fight.”

The 25-year-old ‘went for it’ in his shot versus Farmer and Carroll is expected to do something similar at the Liacouras Center, live on Sky Sports and DAZN.

Tennyson predicts that “it’s going to be a real good battle between them, two southpaws, similar styles, I think it will be a good fight.”

“I’d love to see Jono do it, he’s from my home and I’d love to see it.”

‘The Assassin’, is due to return to the ring at the end of the month in Dublin on the TG4 ‘Clash of the Titans’ card at the National Stadium.

Tennyson has stated his willingness to fight any of the big lightweight names in the Matchroom stable from Ricky Burns to Joe Cordina and has recently been installed at #6 in the European 135lbs rankings..
