Big Plans – Jake Hanney to make boxing return

Mercurial Dublin talent Jake Hanney [5(4)-1(1)] is finally back in boxing and could be set for a major fight.

Irish-Boxing.com can reveal that the 29-year-old has become the latest addition to the ever-growing Boxing Ireland Promotions stable and his team have indicated that big domestics may not be too far off.

Light welterweight Hanney hasn’t fought since an entertaining TV fight with Tyrone McKenna back in March of 2017 where he was stopped in the sixth round, but is said to be eager for a return and keen to deliver on the early promise he showed.

The Inner City puncher debut as far back as 2013 in Australia and was earmarked for massive success Down Under, winning the Aus-Boxing.com Prospect of the Year for 2014.

Hanney didn’t fight in 2015, but his reputation as a puncher with talent meant there was a degree of hype surrounding him when made his Irish debut the year after.

A win over tough Nigerian Innocent Anyanwu saw him back up some big talk – including suggestions of a clash with Phil Sutcliffe Jr – and a fight with McKenna on BoxNation followed.

The Belfast southpaw, who has since forged a solid reputation and a sizable enough profile, managed to stop the Dub on his feet in a bloody battle for the BUI Celtic title now held by Victor Rabei – although Hanney felt aggrieved and instantly called for a rematch.

‘The Wizard’ would fall into inactivity afterwards, with deals with Jay Byrne and Tony Davitt coming to nothing

However, the fighter is now back in training, linking up with Boxing Ireland and joining the stable of Irish-Boxing.com Coach of the Year Eddie Hyland at SBG Tallaght.
