Eddie Hearn and Natasha Jonas herself further fueled talk of a possible showdown with Katie Taylor with an impressive debut on Matchroom’s NXTGEN card in Newcastle on Friday night.

The fighter, who helped Taylor complete her quest to put female fighting on the map when the pair produced a brilliant four rounds in front of a crowd that broke noise records back in London 2012, stopped Monika Antonik within 92 seconds of her pro debut.

The southpaw came out of the blocks firing and hurt her opponent early and kept up the pressure to eventually force an early stoppage.

Jonas, who has linked up with trainer Joe Gallagher, was delighted with her first pro victory and claimed directly after the fight a clash with Taylor is inevitable – but one for further down the line.

“It’s all down to hard work with Joe and myself,” Jonas told Sky Sports.

“Together we have put in the hard work and there is the result.

“It’s [the Taylor fight] what the people want to see, but she’s on her journey and I’m on my journey. If it means we meet at the end, then it means we meet at the end.”

Promoter Hearn added that “for me, I know it’s early days, but I can’t help thinking about Natasha Jonas against Katie Taylor in a year’s time, perhaps for a unification.”

“Now we have two real quality fighters in the lightweight division that will eventually meet.”
