Italian Job – Tommy McCarthy handed Fab’ title chance

Tommy McCarthy [14(7)-2(1)] has been handed another chance to impress his way back into the cruiserweight reckoning.

Having put another period of frustrating inactivity behind him by putting two wins together either side of the New Year, McCarthy was handed a Sky Sports date and a fight that could have propelled him significantly forward.

However, after he was stopped by Richard Riakporhe there were some suggesting the 28 year old faced a rebuild, yet that isn’t the case.

‘The Mac Attack’ registered routine and quick fire victory on the Summer Brawl show and has since been handed a significant fight.

MHD Promotions today confirmed McCarthy will challenge Fabio Turchi [17(13)-0] the undefeated Italian cruiserweight champion for his WBC International cruiserweight title.

The bout plays out in Rome on July 11th on a Matchroom Boxing Italy card and will be broadcast on DAZN.

The Belfast cruiser hinted at a noteworthy bout minutes after he beat Jiri Svacina in the Europa Hotel in May and has been training in Denmark with the knowledge it was made if not yet officially announced.

Manager Mark Dunlop believes his fighter faces a tough test, but claims it could prove exactly the springboard fight the popular McCarthy needs.

“This is Tommy’s big chance and he has got to take it,” said Dunlop, who will also travel to Italy with European lightweight challenger Paul Hyland Jr later this month.

“It was disappointing when he lost to Richard Riakporhe in his bid to become the WBA Inter-Continental champion. This is a tough test for Tommy but if he fires on the night it could be the springboard he needs to bigger and better fights.”
