‘It will happen’ – Nevin confident of Luke Campbell revenge

The Sky Sports pundits wondered whether Luke Campbell must look ruefully at the success scored by fellow London 2012 Olympian Anthony Joshua as the Hull man secured revenge over Yvan Mendy on Saturday night.

Six years after the pair claimed gold, Joshua has not only won a world title but unified belts while Campbell has suffered two career defeats, albeit one in a world title fight.

If they wondered how Campbell felt fighting a world title eliminator on the undercard of his former GB team mate, Irish fight fans wondered what must be running through the man he beat in that London final, John Joe Nevin’s mind as he watched the fight on TV.

Nevin’s pro career has yet to take off. The Mullingar Shuffler’s paid innings has been stop-start to the say the least.

The man some argue is Ireland’s greatest ever amateur has fought 10 times since turning over in 2014 and has yet to progress past eight rounds.

However, not only is Nevin confident he will kick on soon the fighter who was last out in March believes he will get the chance to Campbell revenge.

“It will happen [the Campbell rematch],” Nevin confidently declared when speaking to Irish boxing journalist Bernard O’Neill.

“Once I get an eight-rounder or a ten-rounder under my belt, I will start looking at the big names.”

“The aim to fight Campbell is still there, everyone would love to see that,” added the Westmeath man who scored an impressive eight-round win over Commonwealth bronze medallist Alex Torres Rynn last time out.

“He did very well on Saturday, I was surprised he lost the first one as I didn’t rate Mendy at all. It’s just a matter of time and getting the fights in for me.

“I know I can beat all these guys, I know I can beat Campbell. I’m not running him down, I think he’s a tremendous fighter but I think I have to style to beat him in the pro game.”
