Irvine is raring to go and gunning for gold says Walsh

Brendan Irvine tipped the scales at 49kg on the button this morning ahead of his historic light-flyweight (49kg) final with Russian southpaw Bator Sagaluev, who also weighed in, in Baku, Azerbaijan this morning.

Whoever emerges victorious from today’s three-rounder will be the first ever European Games male boxing champion.

Nineteen-year-old Irvine, who boxes out of the St Paul’s BC in Antrim, can’t wait to get into the ring for the gold medal match, according to head coach Billy Walsh.

“We had a team meeting this morning and Brendan is in fantastic shape. He wants to go all the way out here and he’s raring to go,“ said Ireland’s chief seconds.

Olympic champion Katie Taylor, Sean McComb and Michael O’Reilly, who are all guaranteed at least bronze, will be in semi-final action tomorrow.

Today’s Irvine versus Sagaluev final begins at approximately 2.45pm (Irish time).
