Irish Tommy Carter aiming for debut win against fellow prospect on Friday

Friday evening will see the debut of Irish Tommy Carter at the Middleton Arena just outside of Manchester.

The 21 year old middleweight of Drogheda descent will face fellow prospect Matty Mainwaring [1(0)-0] and the Tideswell man told Irish-Boxing.com that he is confident of victory in a tough first bout.

Carter’s links with Ireland are immediate. His family all still live in Drogheda and his father, Ronan, was an Irish Youth champion with Holy Family BC before emigration

Detailing his background in the sport, Carter explains that “I started boxing at the age of 10, at first I just wanted to stay fit, but then decided that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and compete myself.”

“I took a break from the ages of 17 to 20 and it is one of my biggest regrets.”

Describing his decidedly pro style, the youngster said “I am an inside fighter.”

“I like to work the body and bring the shots through, much like Ricky Hatton.”

While many boxers start there career with notions of World titles and international stardom, Carter feels that “an Irish title would be nice!”

For his debut on Friday, in a refreshing choice, Carter is facing a fellow prospect, Matty Mainwaring. The option to go straight into tough fights rather than build experience against journeymen (or “trained survivors” as Carter describes) was a straightforward one for the middleweight who explains that “I’m up for a challenge.”

“I have never looked for the easy way and I never will, that’s not how you make a name for yourself.”

“I would rather get in there knowing that the person in the opposing corner wants that win just as bad as me.”

On Mainwaring, Carter has “seen a lot of him in interviews and on the pads but not a lot of footage of his last fight.”

Confident of the win nonetheless, Carter believes that “my pressure on the inside will be to much for him, that’s all I’m saying.”
