Irish title hopeful Rohan Date backed to ‘go all the way’

Rohan Date [8(6)-0-1] wants to secure the Irish title before moving on to world level explains his manager and trainer.

Johnny Edwards believes the Waterford fighter has ‘world class potential’ and believes the East End fight fans will see a genuine future star at the York Hall  later this month.

The 26-year-old is one of a number of Irish fighters on the June 22nd ‘Irish Invasion’ card and is one that the English based coach believes will eventually end up at world level.

“Rohan definitely has world-class potential,” he said.

However, before he reaches world level the Déise fighter wants to win the Irish title.

Date is one of a number of exciting domestic welterweights currently active, but has said he is open to challenging the winner of the light welterweight Irish title fight which takes place in Cork on July 20 between Noel Murphy and Jake Hanney.

Either way his manager and coach revealed domestic glory is the immediate goal for the noted puncher.

“We’re looking at going for the Irish title and then pushing on.”

Date began his pro career in Dubai and his last appearance was out in the Middle East, but his team are hoping to base him in Ireland and the UK moving forward.

“Robbie was in Dubai – but that was getting him nowhere. He was struggling to get fights. Robbie Flynn put him in contact with me and from our first session together we connected. We’ve had six fights together now and Rohan looks like a real class act,” continued Edwards.

The fighter, who joins the likes of Irish champion Eric Donovan, Kerry’s Kevin Cronin, and Cavan’s Dominic Donegan in trading leather at the famous York Hall in Bethnal Green later this month, has been noted as a serious puncher since turning over.

However, his coach believes he is now adding more strings to his bow and suggests he is making improvements that will see help him reach the top of the pile.

“He came to me as a bit of a brawler, but he’s boxing now and he still has that knock-out punch. Rohan is a handful for anyone. Nobody gets the better of him in sparring and I’m sure he can go all the way.”
