Irish team to take on Poland in Elite International tomorrow


The Irish team arrived in Poland yesterday ahead of the weekend’s international with Poland.

Both nations meet in Kielce on Friday night, and the teams weighed in this evening.

National Elite champions Dean Walsh and Martin Keenan line out at welter and super-heavy and Michael Nevin and John Joyce double up at middleweight on the ten-strong Irish squad.

European bronze medalist Walsh captains the team.

World Universities bronze medalist Ken Okungbowa has withdrawn at heavyweight.

Irish team manager Tony Davis reports that the team are in top form ahead of the meeting.

Jakub Slominski, Tomasz Resól, Bartosz Golebiewski and Arkadiusz Szwedowicz are the current Polish Elite champions on the home team.

Golebiewski beat Daniel Adamiec in the Polish middleweight final last March.

Joyce meets Golebiewski on Friday and Nevin faces Adamiec

Under-22 champion and Elite runner-up Moran faces Slominski at light fly, while Elite Senior light heavyweight runner up Tony Browne takes on Szwedowicz.

Intermediate champion Tom Casey makes his debut on the night whileWayne Kelly returns to Poland where he won boxer of the night in an international between a Wexford select and a Polish regional select during the Summer.
