Irish pro boxing set to expand to new city in 2019

The home of Munster Rugby and the All Ireland hurling champions looks set to add another string to its already impressive sporting bow.

Boxing Ireland Promotions have moved past considering putting on a pro show in Limerick city to making positive steps toward bringing boxing back to home of former World champion Andy Lee and former European title custodian Willie ‘Big Bang’ Casey.

Between these two fighters, five shows were run in Limerick at the turn of the decade, all at the UL Arena, and all promoted by Brian Peters

With the success of Waterford’s first show in over 70 years last February, regional shows became a distinct possibility for promoters again.

Assassin Promotions are said to be exploring a Mayo homecoming for Ray Moylette, Neil Power Promotions will return to Waterford in the new year, momentum is building in Derry, and Boxing Ireland felt Eric Donovan, who loved his Waterford appearance, was a model to bring Kildare fans out in force.

With the emergence of Limerick ticket seller and genuine boxing character Graham McCormack, Munster’s second city was another regional venue raised during the ‘share the love around the country’ talks – and it seems the Treaty County could play host to a show in early 2019.

The promoters behind the Celtic Clash series have recently signed Limerick-based Kerry lightweight Siobhán Ní Laoire, Boxing Ireland have a second local puncher to excite.

Stephen Sharpe of Boxing Ireland told Irish-Boxing.com that positive steps have been taken toward a Limerick show and revealed it will happen sooner rather than later.

“I spent two days in Limerick last month looking at venues and meeting with sponsors regarding a show in Limerick. We have a good relationship with Limerick and it’s definitely a place we plan on running a show and that process has already started,” outlined Sharpe before stressing that attention is primarily on the ‘Celtic Clash 7’ card in Dublin that looks likely to land on November 24th.

“For the boxers, it’s one fight at a time and for us it’s one show at a time and our focus in currently 100% on Dublin and Celtic Clash 7. We have a couple of lads on the October 6th Assassin show which is shaping up to be a really good show and then we go soon after with Celtic Clash 7.”

“Then we will have another look towards Limerick.”
