Irish pro boxer tries Muay Thai on holidays – knocks opponent out

Declan Geraghty [17(4)-2(1)] is currently enjoying a well-earned holiday in Thailand following a career-best win over Johnny Quigley.

However, just because he’s half a world away doesn’t mean the Dublin super featherweight isn’t fighting.

Geraghty is travelling around the South East Asian nation and is currently on the Phi Phi Islands. Tonight he was at the famous Reggae Bar in Ko Phi Phi, where patrons are actually given the opportunity to get in a ring in the middle of the venue and throw down in a proper Muay Thai fight.

27-year-old Geraghty, who had been contemplating giving it a go over the past week, got in the ring tonight for a knock with devastating results.

Matched up with what looked to be another bar-goer, Geraghty engaged in what was essentially a boxing match, with no kicks being thrown.

It didn’t take long for the Irish fighter to finish his foe either, forcing numerous standing counts and then dropping and finishing his unaware opponent with a bodyshot in the final seconds of the opening round.

Southpaw Geraghty outpointed Quigley at the end of last month and called afterwards for further big fights, naming Jono Carroll, Marco McCullough, James Tennyson, Martin J Ward, and Ronnie Clark as potential targets.

The fighter, who incurred a 28-day medical suspension following cuts suffered versus Quigley and was therefore unable to step in for Carroll versus McCullough in Belfast this weekend, will be back in Ireland soon and will resume training under his father at Jay Byrne’s Supreme Altitude and Fitness centre.
