Irish boxers claim hat-trick of wins abroad

Cork middleweight Spike O’Sullivan grabbed all the headlines last night with a stunning win in Canada – however his seventh round stoppage of the touted Antoine Douglas was not the only Irish victory of the night.

There were three other triumphs across America, England, and Scotland as Irish boxing rounds off a brilliant 2017 with a bang.

At the Plainridge Casino in Plainville just outside of Boston, Wexford heavyweight Niall Kennedy [10(6)-0] defended his New England title with ease. The Murphys Boxing man stopped Chicago’s Danny Calhoun in the second round with a body shot to retain his belt and add the IBA Continental Americas title to his collection.

At the Oldham Leisure Centre, Belfast featherweight Ciaran McVarnock [10(3)-0-1] had his first fight under Longshots Sports. ‘Bunty’ went to war with Anto Nakic, stopping the Croatian journeyman in the second.

Finally, up in Scotland, Belfast light welter Anto Upton [16(6)-1(0)] bounced back from a late-notice cancellation earlier this month to grab a dominant four-round points win over Santos Medrano at the Paisley Lagoon Leisure Centre in Scotland
