Ireland win DOUBLE GOLD at European Junior Championships

Ireland claimed two glorious gold medals today in Galati on the final day of the European Junior Championships.

Mulhuddart’s Chloe Gabriel and Athy’s Mickes Donoghue both won their deciders in Romania to top the podium.

There have been a lot of losses to Russia at this tournament but Gabriel would not be one, boxing consistently and sharply to win her final versus Valeriaa Linkova.

Donoghue was involved in a high-quality all-action fight with Ukrainian Dmytro Molodan and landed the cleaner shots throughout to add to a massive day for Irish boxing.

The gold is his second medal at this level having claimed bronze in last year’s edition.

There was no joy however for Winnie McDonagh, with the European Schoolgirls champ being forced to settle for silver after losing to Italy’s Viola Piras.

Ireland won nine medals in total this week, with additional bronzes for Taylor Guiney, Marty McCullough, Robyn Kelly, Aaliyah Butler, Tiegan Farrell, and Dearbhla Tinnelly.

Team Ireland are due to arrive home via Bucharest via Dublin Airport (Terminal 1) at 4.45pm on Sunday.
