Ireland claim double GOLD to start off finals day at European Schoolboys/girls Championships

Yasmin Meredith and Kaci Crowley have won gold for Ireland at the European Schoolboys/girls Championships in Bulgaria this afternoon.

The Dublin 54kg and Fermanagh 57kg decisively defeated Russian opposition in in Albena, scoring unanimous decision wins to get Ireland off to the perfect start on finals day.

Glasnevin powerhouse Meredith was far too strong for her opponent, with Ariana Vostrikova being docked a point in the opening round for clinging on. The Russian came out firing in the second but was met by sharp shots from the rangey Irish fighter who then inflicted a count in the third and almost forced a finish as she rounded out a 5-0 unanimous decision win.

In the very next bout, Erne southpaw Crowley imposed her will on Sofia Pelevina, drawing a count in the third round en-route to her own 5-0 win.

Six more Irish fighters go for gold today.

Winnie Christina McDonagh boxes Russian Alina Safina at 63kg, Dearbhla Tinnelly fights home favourite Kasimira Voykova at 57kg, and Nasya McGyn-Igelige boxes Valeriia Vorontsova of Russia at 70kg. Michael Faulkner is up against Russian Linar Valihullin at 40kg, James Donovan boxes England’s Barney Smith at 50kg, and Curtis D’Arcy rounds off the Irish finals versus Russian 76kg Bekhan Alimkhanov.

Ireland will bring home 14 medals tomorrow having already guaranteed a further 6 bronze medals.
