Ireland claim 2 wins at World Youth Championships

Ireland claimed two wins on their second day of fights at the Women’s Youth World Championships in India today.

Welterweight Shannon Reilly and light fly Caitlin Fryers both claimed wins to move into the quarter finals and Last 16 respectively.

Reilly beat England’s current European Youth champion Olivia Hussey in a thriller to book her ticket into the quarter finals in Guwahati, and will next fight to guarantee bronze.

The 3-2 split was revenge for the Bray BC fighter who had been beaten by Hussey on the same scoreline in the quarters the Europeans earlier this year.

Immaculata’s Fryers impressively advanced after unanimously defeating Nasu Misaki.

However, St Brigid’s Edenderry’s Lauren Kelly bowed out following a unanimous decision loss to Taiwanese middle Ya Chun-Yang

Fryers is back between the ropes tomorrow along with Mary Geraghty, Labhaoise Clarke and Marguerita Nevin in the last 16.

Following a massive win, Reilly joins Katelynn Phelan (who received a bye) in the last eight on Wednesday.
