Introducing: Sam Carroll
A late addition to the show, new pro Sam Carroll will make his debut on the big ‘Clash of the Titans’ bill at the National Stadium next Saturday [March 30th] in what will be the end of one journey and the start of another.
The Bray super bantamweight was a talented young amateur but left the sport in his late teens and got involved in some “stupid stuff”. Going down the wrong path, Carroll has boxing to thank for turning him back onto the right direction and he aims to now go all in.
The Wicklow fighter began at Bray BC training alongside the likes of Olympian Adam Nolan and the legendary Katie Taylor. Following his time away he would return with the Rathnew club, fighting in the Intermediate Championships last year, before linking back up with old coach Pete Taylor at the Colosseum Gym in recent months for an assault on the pros.
Carroll has been signed by Boxing Ireland Promotions and told Irish-Boxing.com that “I’m delighted with it. I only got announced a couple of weeks ago, I got all my medicals and paperwork done, I’m a step closer to starting my journey.”
Detailing his background, Carroll explains how “I had taken a break and then I had my first fight, my first senior fight, in the Intermediates where I lost to a brilliant boxer from Ryston [Scott O’Connor].”
“I decided to turn pro then and I’ve been up training with Pete Taylor. I’ve been with him since I was a kid, since I was 10 or 11, it was the first gym I walked into.”
Boxing has helped Carroll focus himself and he outlined how “I took a break for two years, got in a bit of bother, but I got myself out of it. Just stupid stuff in my teenage years, that’s all it was.”
“I was in Rathnew Boxing Club for the last year and I can’t thank them enough for how much they’ve brought me on.”
“Boxing has helped big time, I’ve clearer vision, the boxing brought me on.”
Carroll will face awkward Pole Kamil Jaworek [5(3)-11(6)] next week over four rounds and he stresses that this is just the start.
The 21-year-old is eager to learn first and foremost, but also wants to put on a show on one of the biggest cards in Dublin for years.
“It’s exciting, let’s leave it at that,” he says coyly when asked to describe his fighting style
“I’m just taking it day by day, I’m only starting off. This is only the start of my journey, the very start. I’m just absorbing everything in.”
