Introducing: Paddy Clavin

It’s a case of now or never for Templemore’s Paddy Clavin.

Having watched from afar in recent years, the former Haringey Box Cup winner believes the timing is perfect for him to enter the growing paid ranks and play a role in an increasingly exciting domestic scene.

Throw into the mix the fact the former heavyweight amateur who will campaign at super middle is 29 and that ‘time’ element rings further true.

“What boxer doesn’t want to go pro it’s a dream come true,” beams one of a number of 2019 additions to the pro game in his first interview with Irish-Boxing.com.

“I’ve just turned 29 so i feel it’s now or never. I have been keeping a close eye on all the other lads turning over the last few years. It’s a really exciting time for Irish boxing and I want to play my part in it.”

The Thurles BC graduate and kids coach has performed at heavyweight as an amateur but the former Munster champion had most of his success at light heavy. Now Clavin plans to move down to super middle and is promising at the very least entertaining fights.

The Tipp puncher outlined how “I’m really looking forward to jumping in and showing people what I can do.”

“I’d say my style is exciting. I’m a come forward fighter. I enjoy a good tear up and at super middleweight I feel I will be strong.

“Short term I want to win my debut in good fashion and I want to be as active as possible.”

“I’ve been inactive myself the last 12 months with the birth of my second child and I got married, so my home life was very busy. I was only coaching kids in Thurles BC during that time.”

“Over the last two months I have been getting back into the swing of things and everything is coming along nicely. I’m in a good place with my training.”

The training should pick up over the next few weeks for Clavin as he prepares to debut on the soon-to-be-officially-announced Celtic Clash 8 card.

Having bore witness to Celtic Clash 7 – a show which saw two great all Irish fights and had a set from Christy Dignam thrown in for good measure – Clavin can’t wait to be part of the Boxing Ireland fight series.

“I will be making my debut on the Celtic Clash 8 with Boxing Ireland Promotions. I have to say Stephen and Leonard made the decision for me to sign with them very easy. They are top lads to work with.”

“I went to Celtic Clash 7, what a night ,had it all. I signed up straight after the show.”

The 29-year-old will train in Thurles with Alex Boyd meaning another new trainer also comes to the scene.

“I will be staying with my club coach at Thurles ABC, Alex Boyd, he’s a top coach. Alex absolutely lives for the sport. He has been involved with pro boxing in Belfast when he was younger and is already pro cutman. He’s been looking after me a good few years now and i wouldn’t have anyone else in my corner.”
