Intermediate champion turns professional

A new name is to enter the pro ranks.

Intermediate light welterweight champion Senan Kelly is to make the move, joining an extremely busy Irish scene.

The Crumlin puncher won the Intermediate title last November and reached the quarter-finals of the Senior Elites in February where he was defeated by eventual champion James McGivern.

Since then he has been training with pro coach Pete Taylor and, following a final amateur win on a club show in Italy at the weekend, his switch has been confirmed.

Kelly has yet to sign a managerial deal and is understood to be fielding a number of offers.

The 22-year-old looks a good addition, with an aggressive style, decent pedigree, and a notable following.

The hard-working Dublin is a college graduate having completed an Education and Training degree in DCU.

Kelly is the first of the 17 Intermediate champions to turn professional and is expected to be followed on this path by a number of others.

The growing Pete Taylor stable features another upcoming debutant in Bray super bantam Sam Carroll, Ballyfermot middleweight Luke Keeler, Naas lightweight Gary Cully, Mullingar super featherweight Davey Oliver Joyce, Shankill heavyweight Sean Turner, and Cork lightweight James Power.

Other new fighters to the pro scene this year include Robbie Burke [1(1)-0], Omagh feather Callum Bradley, Keady lightweight Sean Duffy, Tallaght super feather Declan Kenna, Mullingar middle John Joyce, Kildare light welter Katelynn Phelan, Carrick-on-Suir light middle Randal Barlow, and Waterford light heavy Rhys Moran.
