“I bring nothing to the table” – Natasha Jonas thinks KatieTaylor rematch is some time off

Natasha Jonas [6(5)-0] admits that it is obvious that Eddie Hearn signed her with a view to making a big fight with Katie Taylor – but thinks the potential rematch is still some time off.

A possible repeat of the pair’s sensational Olympic 2012 London meeting has been mooted since the Liverpool fighter followed the Bray lightweight into the pro ranks.

However, ‘Miss GB’ dropped down in weigh while Taylor [9(4)-0] went on to become a unified WBA and IBF world champion. The Scouser plans to claim a title at super feather before considering her old amateur rival and went as far as to suggest she ‘brings nothing to the table’.

The Joe Gallagher-trained Matchroom fighter does believe the fight is inevitable, but doesn’t feel it will play out anytime soon.

“I think there’s a reason Eddie signed me, to be honest,” Jonas told Boxing News.

“People want to see that fight because of how good it was at the Olympics in 2012. She’s come out recently, or so I saw in our Liverpool Echo, and said, ‘We would be interested in a fight with Tasha.’

“But we’re at different weights at the minute and I can’t ask for the fight with Katie because I bring nothing to the table. Although it’s a sport, we’re talking about a business as well.

“I need to stick to my own weight and get the titles in my own division before I can even think about stepping up and competing with Katie.

“She’s a little bit ahead of me, to be fair. We’re playing catch up.”

Taylor’s year seems mapped out with a big-name in American on the horizon – Amanda Serrano, Heather Hardy, or Holly Holm – along with either WBO champ Rose Volante or WBC holder Delfine Persoon.

Once the Irish talent has become undisputed lightweight queen the plan will be to secure the biggest fights possible and a clash with Jonas will certainly be big, as will a fight with Cyclone’s Chantelle Cameron.

Jonas first though will target the WBA crown at 130lbs. The 33-year-old stopped Taoussy L’Hadji to win the organisation’s International rankings belt and is now targeting Korean world champion Hyun Mi Choi.
