Hyland learns from ‘frustrating’ opponent

PAUL Hyland Jr pro debut highlighted the extremes between the pro and amateur game.

The 23 year old lightweight was pitted against Zoltan Horvath’s the Bear Grills of journey men when he punched for pay for the first time in the Devinish last Saturday.

Never before would the former amateur and current Belfast prospect have faced a fighter whose sole purpose was to survive. The Hungarian, who has brought 26 out of the 27 fighters who beat him the distance, would have been happy to have wrestled with Hyland from first to last bell. Indeed the sole purpose of offences flurries was to open a route to Hyland’s chest where he wanted to put his head.

Hyland tried all he could get a debut stoppage win, but the defensive fighter ensured he made it to the final bell.

However, despite admitting he was frustrated, Hyland, who caught the eye with his skill set, was happy with his pro baptism claiming he will learn from his debut.

β€œHe made it very scrappy for me and I was just trying to box. It was frustrating and I was trying to stand off and box, but he kept grabbing me.

β€œBut it is something I am going to have to get used to as it is a bit different from the amateur game. It was a real eye opener for me – but it was good to get the four rounds and now I know what it is all about,” he added.

And Hyland says he will out again at the Holiday Inn on June 6.

β€œI hope to stay busy and keeping winning.”
