Hurley secures second Euro Bronze for Ireland

LORCAN HURLEY assured Ireland of at least one bronze medal at the European Junior Championships after recording an impressive win over Pasquale di Silvio in Lviv, Ukraine today.

The Waterford ace beat the Italian light-fly on a unanimous decision in this afternoon’s 48kg quarter-final.

Hurley will now meet Azerbaijan’s in Friday’s semi-final today after producing what Irish team manager Stephen Connolly described as an excellent display.

“Lorcan was top class against a tough opponent and we’re delighted to have one boxer through to the semi-finals,” he said.

Earlier today, Jason Harty eased into the last-eight with an impressive unanimous decision over Yevhen Moskalenko of the Ukraine, but Eric Nash can consider himself very unlucky to have been on the wrong end of a unanimous verdict against Artur Tuniev of Belarus.

Irish coach Billy McClean added: “Jason boxed excellently in his contest and it was a very good performance over the three rounds.. Once again we feel aggrieved at the decision against Eric.

“We felt that he did enough to win, but he can take heart from his performance today and he will benefit from this experience in the future. It’s going to be a very busy day again tomorrow and hopefully we can get another few of our boys over the line into the semi-finals with Lorcan.”

Boxing begins at 12pm and 4pm tomorrow (Irish time).
