Hearn wants British title fight for James Tennyson – but doesn’t think it will be against Anto Cacace

Eddie Hearn claims a British and Commonwealth super featherweight title fight between James Tennyson [19(15)-2(2)] and Anthony Cacace would be big for Belfast.

The Matchroom boss doesn’t think Cacace [15(7)-0] will dethrone champion Martin Ward in London next month, but suggests if the fighter, who is rated extremely highly by those in the know, does win on the undercard of Chris Eubank versus Arthur Abraham, an all-Belfast double title fight makes sense for when he returns later in the year with IBF bantamweight champion Ryan Burnett.

Speaking after ‘The Assassin’s’ exciting win over Ryan Doyle, Hearn said that “I believe he [Tennyson] is on course for a British title fight. Ward will vacate if he wins and Tennyson will be up for the vacant belt. If Cacace wins, him and Tennyson is a big fight.”

“He fought for the featherweight title against a very good fighter in Ryan Walsh, he came back with some good wins, especially over Declan Geraghty and now Ryan Doyle.”

“I think he is ready to fight the winner of Ward-Cacace, but Martin J Ward is going to beat Cacace so he will be fighting for the vacant belt,” the English promoter added with a smirk.

Hearn, who also gave Feargal McCory and Paul Hyland special praise, hinted he might be interested in making Cacace’s managerial stable mate Tommy McCarthy part of his next Belfast venture.

“There are other fighters who we could use. Tommy McCarthy could have a shot at something too.”

Should Cacace win, his manager Pat Magee had indicated that a European title tilt against the winner of Guillaume Frenois’s defence against Ruddy Encarnacion would be next for ‘The Apache.’ However, a high profile fight on the undercard of the next Sky Belfast bill could have greater appeal.
