Hamburg 2017 – Elite Men’s World Championships DRAW


The draw was made this afternoon for the Elite Men’s World Championships which begin in Hamburg, Germany tomorrow.

With qualification now necessary, Ireland bring a five-strong team to the tournament looking to continue their impressive run of medaling at boxing’s toughest tournament, with seven medals in the previous four editions.

At flyweight, Belfast’s Brendan Irvine is seeded and has received a bye to the Last 16 on Monday evening. He will face the winner of the bout between South Korean Inkyu Kim or Kazakh Azamat Issakulov.

At bantamweight Kurt Walker begins against Dominican Leonel De Los Santos tomorrow afternoon – who won the American Championships earlier this year.

At light welterweight Sean McComb is in against Brazlian Joedison De Jesus in Round 1 tomorrow evening.

Three-time European champion Joe Ward is seed at light heavy and will begin in the last 16 on Monday evening against the winner of the bout between Scot Sean Lazzerini, whom he dominated at the Euros, and Georgian Iago Ziziria.

Finally at super heavyweight, Tipperary giant Dean Gardiner faces Dohyeun Kim of South Korea in the opening round on Saturday afternoon.
