Gold medal win for Winnie – McDonagh tops podium at European Schoolboys/girls

Winnie Christina McDonagh has claimed a third gold medal for Ireland at the European Schoolboys/girls Championships this afternoon in Albena.

The Neilstown 63kg overwhelmed Russian opposition in the final to take a unanimous decision win and continue a great day for the Irish team.

Despite giving away height to Alina Safina, McDonagh consistently got inside to outwork her longer foe and claim a deserved 5-0 verdict and yet another gold for Ireland.

There was no joy however for Dearbhla Tinnelly or Nasya McGyn-Igelige who both had to settle for silver at 67kg and 70kg respectively.

Tinnelly looked to have gotten the better of the first two rounds versus Bulgarian Kasimira Voykova with hard straight shots but the home favourite was given the nod. McGyn-Igelige, despite seemingly carrying a leg injury, pushed Russian Valeriia Vorontsova all the way.

The Irish corner disagreed strongly with both verdicts.

Earlier this afternoon Yasmin Meredith and Kaci Crowley both on gold with dominant wins over Russian opposition.

Three more Irish fighters go for gold today.

Michael Faulkner is up against Russian Linar Valihullin at 40kg while James Donovan fights England’s Barney Smith at 50kg. Curtis D’Arcy rounds off the Irish finals versus Russian 76kg Bekhan Alimkhanov.

Ireland will bring home 14 medals tomorrow having already guaranteed a further 6 bronze earlier this week.
